When to convert SVG to PNG

SVG is ideal on the web, but plenty of places still only accept raster images: email newsletters, Microsoft Office, social media uploads, app store listings, many CMS image fields and older design tools. Converting to PNG gives you a file that works everywhere while keeping transparency.

Pick JPG for the smallest file when you don't need transparency, WebP for modern websites, and ICO when you need a classic favicon.ico with several sizes in one file.

Getting a sharp, high-resolution PNG

A PNG has a fixed number of pixels, so export at the largest size you'll display it. For retina and high-DPI screens use 2× or 3× the display size. viewsvg redraws the vector at the target size instead of scaling up a small bitmap, so a 4096px export is as crisp as a 64px one.

If the SVG has no width and height, its viewBox sets the base size. Type an exact width or height and the other side follows the aspect ratio automatically.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert SVG to PNG with a transparent background?

Open the SVG, choose PNG and keep the background on "Transparent". PNG and WebP keep transparency. JPG has no transparency, so it gets a white background unless you pick another color.

What resolution will the PNG be?

Any resolution you choose. Because SVG is a vector format, viewsvg redraws it at the target size, so a 4× or 4096px export stays sharp.

Can I create a favicon.ico from an SVG?

Yes. Choose ICO and select the sizes to include (16, 32, 48, 64, 128, 256). viewsvg packs them into one .ico file.

Can I convert many SVGs to PNG at once?

Yes. Open several files, then use "All files → Export all as PNG (ZIP)" to download every file as a 2× PNG in one ZIP.

Are my SVG files uploaded anywhere?

No. viewsvg runs entirely in your browser. Files are read, rendered, optimized and converted on your device, and nothing is sent to a server. After the first visit it even works offline.

Is viewsvg free?

Yes. Every feature is free with no sign-up, no watermarks and no file limits.
