What is an SVG viewer?

An SVG viewer opens Scalable Vector Graphics (.svg) files and draws them on screen. Because SVG is a text format, a good viewer also shows the code behind the image, so you can see exactly why a shape, color or gradient looks the way it does.

viewsvg is a free online SVG viewer and editor. It renders your file the moment you drop it, lets you zoom from 2% up to 6400%, pan around, and check the image on a transparent, white, black or custom background. The code editor sits next to the preview and updates it as you type, so viewing and fixing an SVG happen in the same place.

How to open an SVG file on any device

The quickest way to view an SVG on any device is to open it here: click Open or drag the file onto this page. It works in Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox on desktop and mobile, with nothing to install. Your operating system can also show SVGs, with some limits:

Windows

Windows can't preview SVG files in File Explorer or the Photos app by default. Right-click the file, choose Open with and pick Microsoft Edge or Chrome to view it, or install Microsoft PowerToys to get SVG thumbnails and a preview pane. To see the code or edit the image, open it in viewsvg instead.

Mac

Select the file in Finder and press the Space bar to preview it with Quick Look, or open it in Safari. Neither shows the code, the viewBox or the file size. Drop the file here to inspect those.

iPhone and iPad

The Files app can preview many SVGs. For zoom, a transparent background check or a PNG export, open viewsvg in Safari, tap Open and choose the file from Files or iCloud Drive.

Android

Most Android gallery apps don't support SVG. Open this page in Chrome, tap Open and choose the file from your storage or Google Drive.

Linux

GNOME Image Viewer, Gwenview and most file managers display SVG files. Use viewsvg when you also need the code, optimization or PNG export.

What is an SVG file?

SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) is an XML-based image format from the W3C. Instead of pixels, an SVG file describes shapes: paths, circles, rectangles, text and gradients, using coordinates inside a viewBox. That is why SVGs stay sharp at any size, from a 16px favicon to a billboard, and why simple icons are often smaller than the PNG equivalent.

Every browser supports SVG, so it's the standard format for logos, icons, illustrations, charts and UI graphics on the web. Because the file is plain text, you can open it in any code editor, but you only see what it looks like when it's rendered. An SVG viewer gives you both.

Why use viewsvg instead of a browser tab or a design app?

Opening an SVG in a browser tab shows the image but nothing else. A design app like Illustrator, Figma or Inkscape can edit it but takes time to open and often rewrites the markup. viewsvg sits in between:

Frequently asked questions

How do I view an SVG file online?

Drag the .svg file onto this page, or click "Open" and choose it. The SVG renders right away in the preview, and its code appears in the editor so you can change it live.

What program opens SVG files?

Any modern web browser (Chrome, Edge, Safari, Firefox) can open SVG files, and so can design apps like Illustrator, Inkscape and Figma. An online SVG viewer like viewsvg works on every device without installing anything, and also shows the code, size and viewBox.

How do I view the code of an SVG file?

Open the file here and its source appears in the code editor next to the preview, with syntax highlighting and line numbers. Use Format to indent minified code so it is easy to read.

Can I edit the SVG code and see changes live?

Yes. The code editor has syntax highlighting, error markers and undo. Every change re-renders the preview. You can also rotate, flip, resize and recolor without touching the code.

Why does my SVG show an error?

SVG is XML, so it must be well-formed: tags closed, attributes quoted, and a root <svg> element with xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg". viewsvg highlights the exact line with the problem and keeps the last valid preview on screen while you fix it.

Can I open several SVG files at once?

Yes. Drop multiple files and each opens as a tab. You can switch between them, optimize all of them at once, or download them as a ZIP of SVGs or PNGs.

Can I view SVG files on my phone?

Yes. viewsvg works in mobile Safari and Chrome. Tap Open to pick an SVG from your files, then pinch to zoom and drag to pan.

Does the viewer show animated SVGs?

Yes. SMIL animations (<animate>, <animateTransform>) and CSS animations inside the SVG play in the preview. Only scripts are removed.

Is it safe to open SVG files from unknown sources?

viewsvg removes scripts, event handlers and javascript: links before rendering, and renders the SVG in an isolated shadow DOM so its styles cannot affect the page.

Are my SVG files uploaded anywhere?

No. viewsvg runs entirely in your browser. Files are read, rendered, optimized and converted on your device, and nothing is sent to a server. After the first visit it even works offline.

Is viewsvg free?

Yes. Every feature is free with no sign-up, no watermarks and no file limits.
